Fertility statistics

The figures below aim to help support reporting on fertility, infertility and assisted reproduction. If there is a statistic you'd like help with, that isn't listed below, please get in touch.

FERTILITY
1 in 6
people worldwide experience infertility.
INFERTILITY
12 months
of regular, unprotected intercourse without achieving pregnancy is how infertility is commonly defined.
ASSISTED REPRODUCTION
10M+
births worldwide have been made possible by assisted reproductive technologies.
Age & fertility
AGE 40
is when a woman's natural fertility is about half that seen in her late 20s to early 30s.
UK. HFEA’ to ‘IVF OUTCOMES
31%
was the average UK IVF pregnancy rate per fresh embryo transferred in 2022, according to HFEA data.
IVF & AGE
42% and 16%
were the HFEA-reported pregnancy rates per fresh embryo transferred for ages 18–34 and 40–42, respectively.

Regional context

18.93%
infertility prevalence in a tertiary-centre study from Eastern Saudi Arabia, with primary infertility more common than secondary. This finding comes from a peer-reviewed publication and should be reported as a study estimate, not a national prevalence figure.
27.7%
of male partners in the same study had sperm counts below 15 million.
68.5%
of those were azoospermic (no sperm detected in the semen).
Note for editors
Global and UK regulator statistics are often the safest choice for headlines because they come from major professional or regulatory bodies.

Saudi or Middle East figures are valuable, but they should be described carefully unless they come from nationally representative datasets. The Saudi prevalence figure above comes from a respected peer-reviewed study, but it is not, on its own, a definitive national rate.
